To name only ten of Barcelona's attractions for families with young children would be to sell the city short, because it has much more than that. However, most families do not vacation in Barcelona, or even visit the city, long enough to visit much more than ten, so here are the top ten as we see them:

1. Las Golondrinas or Swallow Boats

Las Golondrinas are small double-decker boats that offer two tours: one round the harbour and the other round the coast and the harbour. One takes about 35 minutes, and the other 90 minutes and involves open sea cruising, but is only 12.50€ for adults and 5.00€ for children.

These tours are great for children and adults alike and you can get both directly in front of the Columbus statue, on the port side of the Plaça Portal de la Pau.

2. Tibidabo Amusement Park

This Barcelona attraction is wonderful for small children - it might be a bit young for the teenagers in your family, but who knows? Perhaps a return to their childhood would do them good. It offers over 30 traditional attractions, both traditional and modern, and you get there by means of train, tram and funicular railway! That's fun enough for most kids, but wait till they get into the park! The simulation airplane ride is very popular as is the traditional high Ferris wheel. If you have a young family they will love it.

3. Barcelona Zoo

Most kids love zoos, and here at Barcelona Zoo we have a large number of animals kept in the most humane conditions and offering you the opportunity to allow your children to come across many animals, birds and reptiles that they have only ever seen in books. Imagine their faces when they see the real things looking at them. On top of that you get pony rides, a mini train and electric cars. Add a restaurant and picnic area and that's one day's entertainment for the youngsters looked after!

4. Barcelona Aquarium

Barcelona Aquarium offers a fabulous array of fish from the smallest to the large sharks, and your kids will just love it. Apart from the normal glorious display of fish in their own habitats, you can introduce your children to marine world through Explora! - a fabulous interactive centre on the top floor. This offers over 50 ways for your kids to interact with the fish and other marine creatures through sight, sound and touch, and they can explore these animals in their own underwater domains. This is very popular with children (and parents!), and also caters for the tots.

5. Port Vell Imax Cinema

The Imax Cinema at Port Vell is something to experience if you've been to a wrap-around screen cinema before. With movies in three different formats on 600 square metre screens, including 3-D movies with special polarized glasses and the massive hemispherical screens that seem to wrap around you, Imax is something to be experienced for children and adults. Your standard movie theatre at home will never seem the same again!

6. The Wax Museum

The Barcelona Wax Museum, in the Passatge de la Banca, is a great way to spend a rainy day - even any day in fact! It is full of marvelous representations and the kids will love the horror exhibitions, the trip between the decks of an old sailing ship and the stone-age men. A great place to take them when you are stuck for something to keep them occupied.

7. Cosmocaixa Science Museum

This is a magnet for children, and if you are looking for a way to stop them complaining then bring them here. The geological wall and the planetarium will astound them, and the Amazonian rainforest is very educational, particularly about the difficulties the world would face without it! A visit here both educates them and entertains them.

8. Parc de Ciutadella

The Parc de Ciutadella is the largest public park in Barcelona, and offers you a great play area for the toddlers when they have to let off a little steam. This is in the El Borne area, and offers a boating lake that the kids normally love, and some wonderful Spanish architecture. It used to be a prison during the Napoleonic Wars.

9. Barcelona Happy Park

The Happy Park in Barcelona is for young children, and again is somewhere you can let them expend their excess energy. The Happy Park in Barcelona is for young children, and again is somewhere you can let them expend their excess energy. It's a huge covered labyrinth-type setup full of bouncy, touchy, feely, jumpy, rubbery contraptions for the little darlings to romp around on. Monitors are on hand and there is a special enclosed area for tiny tots. A must for every parent with boisterous kids - they will sleep well tonight after an afternoon here!

10. Port Aventura

This is last, but the best has been saved for last. Port Aventura is actually about an hour in the train from Barcelona, but this is one of the best amusement parks in the south of Europe, you will ever visit. It's well worth a day trip to Port Aventura - your kids will love you for it.

Port Aventura offers several themed parks based on China, Mexico, the Far West, Polynesia and the Mediterranean, with the Carib Aquatic Park next door. Every one fabulous and every one loved by every child that visits it. It's a must for you and your young family.

So there you are: our selection of the best 10 attractions in Barcelona for families with young children. Details of how to get to each, and opening times and prices, are provided on our website.

Top Ten 'Mistakes' Made by Parents America

Cover of Parenting

On one hand the word "mistake" may be too harsh. Every child is different and only you really know if your offspring is happy and flourishing. Therefore, who is to say what a parenting mistake is and is not?

On the other hand, "mistake" may not be harsh enough. Raising a child is the most important job in the world and if you err as a parent, the word "mistake" may not fully convey the seriousness of the situation.

Chances are though you're not making any of the ten mistakes listed below. Maybe you're close on one or two, but nothing to really worry yourself about. So use this list as a reminder of what not to do as a parent. In our busy lives we often fail to slow down and examine what's going on around us. This list is a great place start when you want to reflect on how you're raising your child.

However, if you realize you're making many of these mistakes it's probably time to sit down with your spouse and reevaluate your roles as parents. Remember, it's never too late to change.

Mistake #1 - Being Your Child's Friend

You should be friendly to your children but you shouldn't be your children's friends. They can have as many friends as they want but they only get two parents. What kids need is to live with two people that will teach, discipline, and protect them. They don't need a wingman or BFF.

Mistake #2 - Not Spending Time with Your Child

It doesn't matter if your kid is born into a wealthy family or one of modest means; it doesn't matter if your child is part of a big family or a small one; it doesn't matter who your kid is because the only thing he or she really wants from you is your time. Yes, work is important but it's never as important as spending time with your son or daughter. This also includes attending their extracurricular activities and being involved in their school.

Mistake #3 - Spoiling Your Child

If your son or daughter gets everything they want they will always want more. In other words, they need to learn the word "no." It may make you feel better (it may be easier) for you to spoil your child but in the long run it does more harm than good. Sure, you want to provide for your child and give them everything they need, but that doesn't mean they need to get everything they want. Save the spoiling for the grand kids.

Mistake #4 - Worrying Too Much About Low Self-Esteem

While you don't want to verbally teardown your son or daughter, it's perfectly okay for them to learn that not everything they do is great. In other words don't praise mediocrity. For kids to grow up healthy they need to have a little self doubt. The kids with too much self-esteem are generally more of a problem than those with too little.

Mistake #5 - Not Disciplining Your Child

Yes, it's not very fun to discipline a child. Yes, it takes time and energy, but you have to do it-if not for yourself than for everyone else. You'll know you're disciplining your child correctly when they behave better away from home. Remember to never argue with your son or daughter. You're the parent. What you say goes; there's no discussion. If they don't like it, then they can suffer the consequences.

Mistake #6 - Being a Poor Role Model

Whether you realize it or not, your child is learning how to behave from watching you. There are some times and situations where the phrase "do as I say not as I do" applies (homework, bedtime, wine with dinner) but for the most part they do what you do. This applies to how you treat other people; your diet and exercise; and how you deal with stress.

Mistake #7 - Treating Your Kids Like Wimps

Humans have been around for 200,000 years. This means kids have been around for 200,000 years. It also means your kid will be fine if he or she has to make their own lunch, takes the bus home from school, or gets called a name by the neighbor kid. Children are emotionally and physically tougher than we give them credit for. They don't need to be coddled all the time.

Mistake #8 - Failing To Give Them Responsibilities

No one gets a free lunch. Even your cat earns their keep (either by catching mice or being extremely cute). Your child is no different. They should have age appropriate responsibilities, i.e. chores. They need to learn right away that life is basically a series of one-thing-you-don't-want-to-do after another. Plus, if your child is allowed to coast at home how are they going to act at college or on the job?

Mistake #9 - Living Vicariously Through Your Children

Just because you wanted to be a world-class gymnast doesn't mean your son or daughter does too. Let them find their own passion. Pushing your child into an activity, especially something they don't genuinely love to do, usually results in resentment rather than greatness. However, if they do find their bliss support them one-hundred percent.

Mistake #10 - Not Being True To Your Word

Whether it's a threat or a promise be prepared to always back up your words. This is easier said than done as sometimes you say things in the heat of a moment you wish you hadn't and what sounded like a good idea on Sunday isn't such a good idea after working a 12-hour shirt on Tuesday. Nonetheless you need to try as hard as humanly possible to make your word golden. If your kid realizes you're all talk, you'll have a huge problem on your hands.

Every child loves to play at the playground, and nothing is better than having your very own playground in the backyard. It's as exciting to a child as Christmas morning. How do we as parents pick out the perfect outdoor play set for them?

Bringing your child with you to pick it out is key. The excitement of getting to decide which one to bring home can become one of their fondest childhood memories. Plus, you will be able to ensure that it is something they will be sure to enjoy.

Before you head to the store though, you'll need to take some measurements. Looking around your yard, you're going to need to find the perfect spot to put it. Obviously you are going to need a fairly large space, on flat ground. If you're opting for one with swings, you will need to make sure there is adequate room for your little one to swing without running into things like the fence.

Once you've picked the spot and have your measurements, it's time to take them to the store.

It can be a bit intimidating once you get there. There are so many different types of outdoor play sets to pick from. Which one is right for you?

Here's some tips to help you pick the perfect one:

Do you want one that will work for your child as he grows up? Or are you willing to get the smaller set for him now, and get a bigger one meant for older children later.

Different sets have additions that can be purchased separately. Do you want to go with a basic one right now, and add on more parts as he grows?

Material is another big decision. Wood can be much softer and inviting then the newer metal ones, but at the same time carries the risk of splinters and even catching on fire. Metal is sturdy, and will outlast wood when taken care of properly, but can be cold and slippery when the weather is on the cooler side. Not to mention if you are in a really damp climate, it can rust easily and become quite a danger to your child.

Another thing to consider is how many children you have, or will have playing on the play set. Some are designed for only a few children, while others have enough space and additions that plenty of children can play on it.

Picking out a play set for your child isn't as easy as it first appears. There are many different decisions that go into picking out the perfect one to add to your backyard. Once you've decided though, it will be well worth the time and effort to see your little one's face light up at having their very own backyard playground.
