Having recently married, Christina Aguilera, like many newlyweds, is probably working on setting up and decorating her house to make it more of a home. Flowers are an excellent way to brighten up any room in the house, and new trends in decorating with flowers emerge every day.

When you or guests enter your home, you want the first space in your home to bring a feeling of welcome and set the tone for the rest of the house. Your entranceway gives the first impression of your home. If you don't have an entryway space inside your front door before you enter other rooms, use flowers outside the door. Try hanging a wreath on your front door-grapevine or straw will work well. Attach small vases to the wreath and place fresh cut flowers in them. If you do have an entranceway space, you might display a favorite piece of artwork and use flowers to help draw eyes to it. If the piece is a sculpture placed on a pedestal, you could drape the pedestal with flowers. Or, for a warmer, friendlier feeling, set a basket of fresh flowers on a table.

In many homes, the kitchen is the gathering place. Flowers can be used in any number of creative ways to brighten up your kitchen. Try placing small clay pots in a windowsill and fill them with plant varieties that love the sun. You might even grow your own herbs, which can be a delightful decoration while being useful as well. If your kitchen is the cozy, old-fashioned kind, flowers will look great in antique water pitchers or teapots.

Keep your bedroom and guest bedroom smelling deliciously fresh using fragrant flowers like lilacs, tea roses, lilies, peonies, or freesias. If you happen to grow them in your own yard, snip a few and place them in a bud vase on the dresser or bedside table. These flower varieties are also available from your local florist. If you prefer to use a less fragrant flower variety, you can still keep the room smelling fresh by placing a bud vase down inside a clear glass bowl filled with potpourri.

Your living room or family room can be made either warmer or brighter, depending on the colors and styles of flowers you use. If you'd like to brighten up your living room during the summer and you have a fireplace, consider placing a large arrangement in the hearth. You can carry that feeling to other areas of the room by using the same flower varieties in smaller vases placed on end tables or shelves. For a warming effect, float a few large blooms, such as those from a gardenia or gerbera daisy, in a crystal bowl with floating candles.

Regardless of the room, flowers can be used to achieve any look you like. If you're at a loss for how you can use flowers in your home, take photographs of the spaces in your home where you'd like to add flowers and ask your florist for help. Your home can be even more beautiful than it is now-even if you don't live in a mansion the likes of Christina Aguilera's.

The Dress Code - Five Steps to a Greener Wardrobe

In the last few weeks, we've discussed a number of healthy ways to live, ranging from proper diet and skin care to the values of recycling and green living. The message of a green lifestyle is simple: We care about our planet, and want to leave it as good as we found it and even better, for our children and for everyone. The wonderful thing about this is that there are countless ways to live green.

For example, consider the budding green and organic clothing movement. While the idea of organic clothing might sound a bit unusual at first, it really is an extension of the idea of organic food. Clothes are often made from plant materials like cotton, and these can be grown under organic conditions just like food products. With that in mind, here are five ways you can start dressing green.

Dress Code #1 - Shop Organic

The most straightforward and quickest way to get into some green attire is to find green and organic clothing outlets. There are literally dozens of such stores online, for a start. A quick Google search for 'Green Clothing' comes up with a number of promising hits, such as Fashion and Earth, and White Apricot, both of which have significant green-oriented fashion sections.

When it comes to local stores there are sometimes fewer choices. Clothing retail markets can be dominated by chain stores or specialized stores catering to specific body types or enthusiast niches. This doesn't mean there aren't any such places; just that they may take a bit more digging to find than the online options might call for. However, some chain stores are responding to consumer demands by offering Organic items.

Dress Code #2 - Make the Most of What You Have

An important theme in sustainable living is longevity. Buying a new set of organically made shirts for school is a wonderful step, but if it leads you to throw out perfectly usable shirts that you already have available, then how much good has actually been done? Clothes that you already own are a wonderful way to focus on sustainable fashion. They don't cost you anything extra to buy or require any new materials to make.

Of course if the clothes don't fit anyone in the house, there isn't a great deal of sense in keeping them around just in case. However, there are alternatives to simply scrapping them. If they're in good condition, consider donating them to a charitable organization. Or, if they're worn out past the point of decency, they make great scrap material for clothing patches, art projects, or even just washrags.

Dress Code #3 - Watch How You Wash

It takes a lot of resources to wash clothes. Apart from the water itself, there's the energy needed to power the washing machine and dryer, and if you're doing a hot-water wash that will take up still more electricity. These are resources generated in most cases by fossil fuels, and easing our dependence on these is an important part of living sustainably.

When shopping for clothes, pick out ones you can run through a cold water wash cycle. During warmer months, air-dry your clothes on clotheslines instead of relying on the dryer. As for the clothes you already have, consider replacing or repurposing the ones that require warm washes first, rather than the cold-wash friendly ones. Also, try to avoid or at least limit the number of outfits that need dry cleaning.

Dress Code #4 - Shop Smart, Save Money

We can save and reuse what outfits we already have, but we're eventually going to need to get new clothes. If we want to choose green fashions, it sometimes can cost a pretty penny. This is one of the toughest limiting factors on many green choices, and clothing is no exception.

Fortunately, there are always sales. Check with the online companies and watch for weekly discounts and special bargains. Do some research, bide your time, and buy when you can get the very best deals for your dollars.

Dress Code #5 - The Web is Your Friend

In addition to the many online shopping opportunities, the Web has an abundance of purely informative websites, with numerous articles available for just about any curiosity that strikes your mind. This includes information on sustainable living in all stripes, clothing choices included. One really great resource that some people just don't seem to be aware of is the Internet discussion group.

There are dozens of forums, blogs, and other kinds of communities where like-minded people gather together and find relevant things to talk about, green living included. See if there's a community that you're interested in and join up. You may find a great deal on clothing, or learn a cheap way to make patterns for home sewing attempts. The information is out there, ready for the taking.

Dressing green is about much more than making sure your clothing is made from all-natural, fair-trade materials - though these are very important, too. It's about a big picture mindset, and about taking many small steps to make the best of everything you have available to you. There is no one step that will make the world green, but rather many small, easy steps that we can all start taking right now.

When A Strong Woman Can Make You A Better Man

Behind every man, there is a strong women.

After my recent split with my girlfriend of two years I have found myself thinking how much I have changed. At first, I just thought I was only different around her, but now I seem to be a totally different person.

Does being in such a serious relationship make a man change? Obviously spending a lengthy period of time with anyone will change a certain aspect of your life, whether it be something trivial, your fashion sense or in my case my masculinity.

I believe I was so infatuated with this woman, and I spent so much time with her that I actually became "One of the girls". At first I guess it sounds pretty bad, but really its not. The easiest way to have an understanding of women is to spend time with them, hang out with them. You pick up their habits and every women wants a man to go watch a chick-flick with them, and not with someone who is going to pretend to be interested.

Picking up a female's habits are really not that bad though, you might find yourself talking to her about hair and clothes, but the first thing you will notice is that you actually do take much better care of yourself, and you have become a lot more polite. These are the most obvious and the beginning signs that she is starting to "mold" you.

Whether a women wants to admit it or not, when they are in a relationship with a man, they see us for what we are and then they see the potential. They like to change a man to make him more attractive, for their pleasure and maybe their reputation... I don't know, but its true.

You will find yourself dressing in clothes that she has picked for you which "improve" your appearance, but do they? I doubt that there is one guy out there who hasn't received a bad present from a partner, the majority of these will be clothes, matching jumpers, bright shirts, floral patterns and the dreaded skinny jeans.

I used to be a long haired surfer dude, (who couldn't surf), and now with the "guidance" of that special lady I have short neat hair, and I guess you could say I dress preppy. Huge transformation?

Well I can let you into a secret, most men can - but a lot of us can't - learn how to say no! Tell her enough is enough, unless you want to change.

Think of it this way, the A-list celebs we all see on TV don't pick their own clothes, they have personal shoppers - women they pay to tell them what to wear! And us the lucky guys have it free.

I'm not just saying that women control what we wear, they also control what we eat, our mannerisms and the way we look at other women. Well done girls!

I can honestly say some women have such power to make a man look at the floor when a hot women walks into the room! I know this because I was with a very "powerful" woman.

But if you know how to control it you can avoid it, and another secret women think we don't know is that they indirectly use sex as a weapon. Think of that however you might, but it's true. Women control us, and we let them, and we love them for doing it. It does make us better people, and we love them for it.

One day women will rule the world, although at the moment it may be from behind the scenes. Either way, no man will ever be more powerful, than the woman who made him.

Organic Products - What Does It Mean To Be Organic

The National Organic Program administers the O...

In 1933, Lord Northbourne published a book titled 'Look to the Land,' in which he outlined certain methods of food production he termed 'Organic.' His goal was to establish a view of the farm as an organism, self-contained and self-sustaining, in opposition to what he termed unsustainable 'chemical farming' relying on fertilizers and chemical pesticides. In large part, this organic farming was not a particular change from traditional farming techniques at the time.

In the mid-20th century, the 'Green Revolution' led to widespread methods of chemical and industrialized farming that is still used today. As a reaction to the perceived weaknesses of these modern farming techniques, organic farming has grown in popularity in recent decades and particularly in the last ten years.

What is Organic

Briefly, organic food is that which is farmed using organic farming methods. This means excluding food additives and genetically modified ingredients and avoiding the use of inorganic farming techniques such as chemical pesticides or crop irradiation. The exact definition of organic food can vary - according to the FDA, food is considered Organic if it consists of 95% or more organic ingredients. Other markets may have greater or fewer restrictions, depending on the criteria of various government agencies and the terms they set.

Know Your Food

Prior to the modern boom in organic popularity, the only way to be certain a product was organic was direct observation. Organically minded consumers would visit local farms and buy directly from farmers they knew to rely on organic techniques. They could observe firsthand the way produce was grown or the techniques used to milk cows. They could discuss changes and conditions with their provider, and generally the motto of the day was "Know your farmer, know your food."

This changed with the rapid increase in demand for organic food in recent years - as entire organic supermarkets such as Whole Foods came into being, consumption moved into the mainstream. Not everyone in the suburbs or major urban centers of the world is equipped with the knowledge or the time to get to know their individual local farmers, and sometimes organic produce can travel a great distance between production and distribution. Thus, third party agencies and government organizations have stepped in to create labels that certify products as organic in accordance with various private and public standards.

This does result in a disconnect, and require a sense of trust in these agencies.

Concerned consumers are therefore advised to research the standards set down by the certifying groups, and to do a little online research into how they go about making their decisions. Again, for example, the US certifies any product with at least 95% organic 'ingredients' as organic. This may mean that the end product itself was not prepared in accordance with organic procedures, or is packaged in an inorganic container. A little research can help allay or confirm suspicions and concerns such as these, so the educated consumer becomes the happy consumer.

Why Buy Organic

There are as many reasons for buying organic as there are products to buy. One of the most cited reasons is improved taste and food quality over industrially farmed food. Blind taste tests comparing conventionally and organically farmed apples indicated organic apples were usually sweeter and firmer than their competition. Proponents claim the lack of additives allows the natural, complex flavors of the food to come out and really captivate the consumer.

Another incentive is for personal health. Organic food is farmed with extensive restrictions on the use of pesticides, either in a complete ban or with specific, very strict criteria for their use. Thus, the USDA has released studies indicating that nearly thirty percent of organic foods contain no discernible pesticide residues, and the remainder have them in very small quantities. This is in comparison to conventionally produced foods, which can have as much as two thirds more pesticide residue than organically produced equivalents. Not every pesticide causes demonstrable harm to consumers. However, the point is that people can make better decisions for their health and their lifestyle when they know what is and what isn't going into their bodies.

The lack of pesticides also creates an environmental benefit important to many organically minded consumers. Pesticides can and do run into the local ecosystem surrounding any farming endeavor, and can cause havoc that may take generations to uncover and even longer to repair. Organic farming offers less impact on the ecology of the community and allows for a sense of civic responsibility and pride in participants.

A Little More Money

That said, organic farming does come with a hefty price tag. Since the same amount of land is producing less than conventionally farmed land, organic produce and goods can cost as much as 40% more than the alternative. A half-gallon of organic milk can cost as much as a full gallon of conventionally produced milk, which affects consumers' bottom line. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce this cost, again with a little bit of research.

English: Organic apple orchard in Pateros, Was...
English: Organic apple orchard in Pateros, Washington, USA (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
For example, consider organic strawberries. These of course cost more than conventional strawberries, due to the strict and exacting standards required for their production. However, even the price of organic strawberries will go down during strawberry season, since the market will be flooded with the product, both organic and conventional. So, with a bit of research consumers can find out what seasons are best for each product they're interested in and buy in accordance with these cycles. Additionally, many organic companies offer special coupons and sales, just as do traditional supermarkets. A few minutes searching the web may yield a nice two-for-one sale on organic corn just in time for a big family dinner.

As with any passion, the key to truly getting the best use out of organic products comes from information, consideration, and action.
